We are pleased to announce plans for a trip to Arches National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park in conjunction with the 2010 Workshop on Phased Array Antenna Systems for Radio Astronomy. Workshop attendees and partners are invited to participate in this informal two-day, one night outing to visit some of the most spectacular outdoor scenery in the American West.
These parks are major international attractions located near Moab Utah, which is a three hour drive from the workshop venue in Provo. Attractions include the largest collection of natural stone arches in the world, and an overview of a Colorado River gooseneck bend from the vantage point of a sheer 4000 foot cliff drop off. This rock face was featured in one of the "Mission Impossible" movies with actor Tom Cruise climbing it.
Other optional activities in the area which participants can arrange for themselves through commercial outfitters include white water rafting on the Colorado, mountain bike rental for the famous Slick Rock trail, backcountry hiking, and Jeep expeditions. More information about these destinations is available at http://www.utah.com/nationalparks/arches.htm, http://www.utah.com/stateparks/dead_horse.htm, and http://www.discovermoab.com/.
The trip will take place on Thursday, May 6 and Friday, May 7 immediately following the workshop. Workshop organizers will provide free transportation by motor van from Provo to Moab and around the sites for a limited number of guests, but we invite those with own their own cars to caravan along. There is no direct participation fee, but arrangements are informal with food, lodging and other expenses paid by directly participants. See below for information on overnight accomodations.
